Module 3: Professional and Regulatory Accountability

In their use of information and communication technologies, nurses must exercise judgement and ethical practices, recognize their accountabilities, and participate in continually enhancing the quality and safety of the use of these tools in practice.

Upon completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Delineate what constitutes personal health information
  • Define and differentiate informational privacy and security
  • Explain why there is an increased risk to informational privacy and security with the use of ICTs
  • Identify nurses’ responsibilities and the standards that guide & inform nurses’ professional obligations for maintaining the privacy and security of personal health information
  • Describe the various types of legislation that govern the protection of health information in Canada
  • Identify potential risks associated with the use of technology
  • Discuss the professional obligation of nurses to report system errors and/or failures
