E-Prescribing Module

E-Prescribing Benefits

Medication Errors

  • Medication errors leading to harm are common in Canada and globally (Canadian Patient Safety Institute, 2016; WHO, 2017).
  • Medication errors may occur at any point in the medication process, from prescribing to administration (WHO, 2016). E-prescribing has been proposed as a way to increase safety in the prescribing process and contribute to decreasing medication errors (Institute for Safer Medication Practices, 2000).
  • A number of national organizations in Canada have recognized the potential for e-prescribing systems to improve medication safety (Canadian Medical Association & Canadian Pharmacists Association, 2012; Canadian Medical Protective Association, 2016).
