E-Prescribing Module
Summary
- E-prescribing is the secure electronic creation and transmission of a prescription between an authorized prescriber and a client’s pharmacy of choice, using a clinical Point of Service (POS) solution, in a manner which integrates clinical workflow and software (Canadian Medical Association and Canadian Pharmacists Association, 2012)
- Medication errors causing harm are common and preventable (Institute of Medicine, 2000; Canadian Institute for Health Information & Canadian Patient Safety Institute, 2016),
- Some errors could be avoided by employing technology in the prescribing process (Institute for Safer Medication Practices, 2000; Government of Canada, 2010)
- Nurses are critical to the adoption and meaningful use of e-prescribing in Canada: all regulatory categories will be significant users of the system in a variety of different roles
- Nurses must consider the benefits and risks of e-prescribing and practice in accord with the relevant provincial or territorial regulatory standards.
- The CASN E-Prescribing Guidelines include recommendations for nursing activity in client-centred care, advocacy and leadership and responsibility and accountability. The guidelines also include recommendations for nurses with prescribing authority.
