E-Prescribing: The Canadian Context

  • There are no regulatory impediments to e-prescribing in Canada and e-prescribing can be adopted if they achieve the same objectives as written prescriptions (Government of Canada, 2010).
  • Canada is digitally ready: EMR use in primary care rose from 16% in 2004 to 85% in 2017 (Infoway, 2017).
  • There is greater national leadership: The Government of Canada is promoting safer prescribing practices, which includes the use of e-prescribing systems (Canadian Center on Substance Use and Addictions, 2016).
