Decision-making

While the collection of electronic data is one of the main roles of many modern-day ICTs, information collected in these systems can be used for decision-making in a variety of capacities. For instance, the aggregation of clinical data from electronic records and other data repositories can be used to inform practice and health care delivery through the generation of predictive modeling and other quality improvement analyses.

For instance, health care billing information can be used to help generate statistics and insights related to health care utilization. Other analytical approaches (e.g., Big Data) that use large repositories of data can be used to help inform practitioners and patients to the common trajectories of clients across the health care continuum (McBride, Powers, Gilder, & Philips, 2016).
