Introduction to Informatics and Digital Health

In Summary

Health informatics is focused on information and communication technology (ICT) use in health care by nurses and other clinicians and addresses a wide range of topics including decision support, online clinical documentation, and provider order entry applications. Additionally, it focuses on the design, implementation, and adoption of ICTs in clinical practice settings.

Nursing informatics refers to the specific structure, organization and communication of data, information, and knowledge relevant to nursing practice supported by the use of technology. In addition, it addresses the role of nurses’ in system design, implementation, adoption, and evaluation..

Consumer informatics focuses on the empowerment of consumers to manage their own health through the use of information and communication technologies.

Digital health is a broad reference to technology solutions that support the delivery of clinical care.
