Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Delineate what constitutes personal health information
  • Define and differentiate informational privacy and security
  • Explain why there is an increased risk to informational privacy and security with the use of ICTs
  • Identify nurses’ responsibilities and the standards that guide & inform nurses’ professional obligations for maintaining the privacy and security of personal health information
  • Describe the various types of legislation that govern the protection of health information in Canada
  • Identify potential risks associated with the use of technology
  • Discuss the professional obligation of nurses to report system errors and/or failures
