Professional and Regulatory Accountability
Protection of Health Information
Current policy for the protection of individuals’ personal information is shared across federal and provincial/territorial jurisdictions.
Federally, three acts govern the collection, access, and use of personal information:
- Privacy Act
- Access to Information Act
- Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)
In addition to these Acts, most provincial and territorial jurisdictions have their own specific legislation specifically governing the collection and use of personal health information.
