Outside of regulated health information systems, other ICTs may pose risks to the protection of personal health information.

Social media is one of the most prevalent examples – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr etc. may be vehicles to gain knowledge, advocate for nursing, address health and social inequities, and participate in other professional activities.  However, there have been many cases of nurses’ use of social media resulting in a privacy breach.
