Data Standards
The Canadian Nurses Association has endorsed the adoption of standardized clinical reference terminologies:
- International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) and SNOMED-Clinical Terminology (SNOMED-CT)
- Canadian – Health Outcomes for Better Information and Care (C-HOBIC)
- Logical Observations Identifiers Names and Codes (LONIC) Nursing physiologic assessment panel
ICNP: international terminology that provides description and comparison for nursing practice and allows for cross-mapping between other terminologies.
SNOMED CT: a comprehensive, multilingual clinical health care terminology used in more than 50 countries
C-HOBIC: a systematic, structured language for patient assessment and documentation in acute care, complex continuing care, long-term care and home care.
LOINC: a comprehensive clinical terminology for identifying tests, measurements and observations.
These standardized clinical reference terminologies are examples of several other terminologies and ontologies being used nationally and internationally.
